The Grounds
The Idaho P.E.O. Chapter House is on a beautiful 2 acre park in the residential area of Caldwell. Our BIL Park provides a walking path as well as beautiful flowers and manicured lawns. The flower beds around the grounds host a variety of flowers and shrubs. Residents do have the opportunity to garden if they wish. Our sycamore tree is one of the largest on the state and provides wonderful shade in the summer.
The Mansion
The center piece of the Idaho P.E.O. Chapter House is a Classical-Revival style mansion which was built in 1910 as a private home and remodeled in 1950 for the Chapter House. On the main floor there is a large elegant living room, which can accommodate 40 in a meeting style arrangement. There is also a TV room/sitting room, dining room for 20 and a large modern kitchen where the noon meal is prepared by our staff. On the main floor there is a bright and cheery breakfast room where house residents prepare their morning and evening meals as they wish. In addition there is a two- room suite with private bath, which currently serves as our guest room, and the manager's office on this floor. The main floor does have an outside ramp.
Access to the second floor is by the elegant open stairway or by an elevator. On this floor there is a common sitting room, a library/game room and three private suites each with two or three rooms and their own bath. Each suite offers different arrangements and square footage. Two of the suites have access to the balcony over the front porch. Residents bring their own furnishings to make their suite their home.
The laundry facilities are in the basement. The house is heated with central hot water heat with individual controls in each room. The upper floor has air conditioning. Cable TV, wireless internet and utilities, except phone are included. House residents are also provided weekly housekeeping by our staff and three meals a day.
The house has been beautifully maintained and is on the Registry of Historic Places. Great care is taken in preserving the historic value with any remodeling and landscaping project. Recently all the windows have been replaced with energy efficient windows. As that was done we were able to preserve the original beveled glass that brings rainbows in the house on a sunny day. The mansion is one of the gems in the city of Caldwell.
Just outside the kitchen is a large furnished covered patio where we often enjoy our noon meal during the summer. It is also available for events planned by residents or local P.E.O. Chapters. On a summer evening you might find residents enjoying a root beer float, a card game or a glass of wine.
The Cottages
The campus of the Idaho P.E.O. Chapter House in addition to the mansion includes seven homes that we call "Cottages". Each has its unique style, size and floor plan. The cottages were custom built by P.E.O. members who lived there as long as they were able. They then became the property of the Chapter House.
Every cottage has its own kitchen with refrigerator, stove and laundry hook ups. They are heated with gas and have central air conditioning. All cottages have energy efficient windows. Residents bring their own furnishings to make it their home.
The cottage residents all join in the main dining room for the noon meal which is included in the cost of the rent. The cottage residents are responsible for their own gas heat, electricity, TV, internet and phone. Maintenance is provided by the Chapter House.
As we continue with our tour we will describe briefly each cottage and its uniqueness along with pictures and floor plans.
